Devonmed Dino Fact: Big, flippered awesomesaurs
Q: What was the biggest of all the swimmers ? -Optimas
A: This question was actually answered back in October, but thought it would be a great refresher. The first point I’d like to make is that the main “swimmers” of the Mesozoic were called plesiosaurs (they were not dinosaurs). They were big, flippered sea reptiles like Liopleurodon. Although, to be sure, the Mesozoic had a rich abundance of sea life! These guys were just the biggest ones.
The Mesozoic was populated with a whole host of incredible sea reptiles that terrorized everything else in the sea. We’ve talked about Liopleurodon before, who was the largest of them all but the longest is actually Mauisaurus.
Like Liopleurodon, Mauisaurus was a plesiosaur. Mauisaurus measured out to be a whopping 65ft (20m) in length and was the longest sea reptile of them all. Found only in New Zealand fossil beds, Mauisaurus must have been a fearsome predator during its day. They’ve even found a fossil of one fighting a mosasaur!

Karoake Night review and winners!

The first half of our Song and Dance Party Weekend is over! Karaoke Night kicked off just right with over 25 stepping up to the mic to sing their hearts out! It was awesome. I even stopped in to sing my Justin Bieber parody “Rabies.” Of course, just for fun we always give out some cheesy trophies to whoever our judges deem the best.
1st Place – Tie
LDude & DaviDavi33 and Rikodou
2nd Place
Dialgapalkia
3rd Place
Zitio
Hope you guys had fun and don’t forget to come to the Dance Party Tournament tomorrow at 12:00 WST. Meet at Buckland’s Peak in the Jurassic server, you don’t need teams!

Old Smithiy Is Gone!
Devonmed's Dino Fact: Giraffe bird?
Q: Who’s the biggest flyer? – Gorgey
A: Gorgey, what a fantastic question! As we learned before, dinosaurs only walk on land so any flying or swimming reptile in the Mesozoic was not a dinosaur. The “flyers” were actually called pterosaurs, and they RULED the Mesozoic skies. Flying animals were not common during this era, and they pretty much dominated the air. Evidence has also shown that these creatures most likely were very skilled at walking on ground.
What I didn’t realize before researching this question is how stinkin’ big some pterosaurs became! Quetzalcoatlus and Hatzegopteryx were the two biggest pterosaurs of them all, and they lived during the Cretaceous up until the end. These two had wingspans of 40ft (12m) or more and were about the size of a giraffe. The biggest bird today is the Wandering Albatross, which has a wingspan of 12ft (3.7m). I can’t imagine what it would be like to see one of these monsters cruising through the sky.
The scary part is that paleontologists acknowledge that the fossil record of pterosaurs isn’t near complete, and it is possible that a fossil of a larger pterosaur exists somewhere in the earth… eep!

Devonmed's Dino Fact: Here, kitty kitty
Hey Dinos,
Q: What was the fiercest prehistoric cat of them all? -Irvine
A: Well well well, Irvine. This is a great question. Obviously, sabre toothed cats and wooly mammoths and the like came long after the time of the dinosaurs, in the Early Pleistocene. You bring up a great point about the cats though, because most everyone knows about the famed Smilodon AKA “sabre toothed tiger” but did you know there were many other sabre toothed cats at this time?
There are at least 40 known genera of sabre toothed cats from the Pleistocene, and not all of them even come from the same family! For some reason, multiple groups of mammals evolved to have giant sharp teeth protruding out of their mouths. Nature has a funny way of experimenting with ways to eat other animals!
We can’t really say for sure which one was the MOST fierce, because you have to admit they’re all pretty gnarly. We’d have to go with Smilodon though, as they were the biggest of all of them. Some of them weighed up to 1,200 lbs (500 kg) !! That is how much a grizzly bear can weigh. Yeah, these guys were nasty. Add giant teeth that grew to 11 inches (28 cm) long and you’ve got a prehistoric killing machine on your hands.

Game of the Week – Demolition Derby

You’ve asked for it and now it’s happening. This week’s Game of the Week is none other than the crazy destruction of Demolition Derby. Hop in your best derby car to destroy your friends. If ramming them isn’t enough, fire off with your machine gun or drop some bombs on a fool!
You can find Demolition Derby on the right side of the Tonto Plateau. If you need a break from getting blown up you can always shake a leg across the way at Dance Party. Oh yeah, and Demolition Derby usually gives out a lot of coins as it is. This week it should giving out a whole lot more.
Thanks for the Bday Wishes!

Farewell Cowasaurus
Today’s party marked the end of more than a week of Cowasaurus madness. We’ve had some great times with this crazy cow/dinosaur thing. He loves grass. He’ll hug you. He’ll also poop on you. Still, we love Cowasaurus and he’s become a member of the Webosaurs family.
We had some great times in the Giant Umbrella today for his party, and ended with a few rounds of Dance Party, Demo Derby and Sand Surfing. I asked Cow to say some words before he left -
“Moooo. MOOOO. MOOO!!!! MOO MOO. MOO? MOO MOOOOO MOO”
And then he pooped.
I think what he’s trying to say is “You all have been so great to me. Making friends with you has been the best time of my life. Thanks for the grass and I promise I’ll see you again soon.”
I think…

MOOOOOOOOOOOOO! (Party this Saturday)
MOOOOOO! Holy COW, Cowasaurus has been all over the place this week. You never know when he’s going to show up next. Except for THIS SATURDAY when Cowasaurus throws a raging cow party at the Giant Umbrella in the Undestory Layer.
We’ll be serving grass burgers, grass salads and maybe even some grass eggrolls. Speaking of which, anyone want to volunteer to run the restaurant? Cowasaurus will be on his best behavior (although I can’t promise he won’t poop out some coin codes). You guys need to get together to make sure the restaurant is running smoothly by the time he arrives.
So yo.. MOOOOOOOO. Deets:

Where: Giant Umbrella restaurant in the Understory Layer
When: Saturday – 12:00 WST
Server: Jurassic
In the meantime, you can look for hints on when Cowasaurus will show up by following us on Twitter. I’ll tweet “Mooooo” when he’s arrived on the Island.

Game of the Week – Dino Dig in Sanoran Sands

Hey gang! This week’s Game of the Week is Dino Dig in Sanoran Sands! Unearth some glorious dinosaurs and other prehistoric fossils the same way real paleontologists would. Carefully brush the sand away using your brush, then use a variety of other tools to break up the dirt and rock standing in your way to unveiling a brilliant fossil! Careful though, you’re on a timer so work quickly before the fossil is ruined forever!
There are two Dino Digs on the Island, but if you want to unlock the extra coins for Game of the Week you need to go to the Sanoran Sands one. Have fun digging, dinos!
